There was a ward fundraiser tonight to benefit the scouting and youth programs. The boys were asked to donate a cake to be auctioned off. Aiden chose this cake from the Barefoot Contessa cookbook as the one he wanted to make. I woke him up at 7 am this morning to start baking. He measured the ingredients and did all the mixing. I just poured it into a pan and helped with the oven. Then after school we made the yummy cream cheese frosting and cut up all the berries. It was supposed to have raspberries, but there weren't any in the store so we had to opt for strawberries. He piped all the white strips, placed the strawberries and blueberries and even piped the little white stars on. I would say he did 90% of the cake himself.
Before the auction started I had this nice man in our ward come up and tell me that he was going to buy Aiden's cake and he didn't care how much it cost. Well he kept his word and as the bids went higher and higher so did his bid. I couldn't believe it when the bid reacted $100! Aiden was sure excited and went out to use the phone to call Stephen and tell him the good news. He was sad that he wasn't the highest bidded on cake for the whole evening(one very professional baker's cake sold for $200!) but I think someday he will have an understanding of how impressive it is to have a cake made by an 8 year old sell for $115!
I will say the Bettwieser's did pull some good ticket items tonight for the youth. I auctioned off a family photoshoot and it sold for $125!
I'm really excited about the 4 hours of golf lessons I won for the boys for only $26!
It was a very fun evening and I'm happy that all of our hard work can benefit such deserving programs.
