New Diet

It's time for a big change at our house . I happened on Oprah's show last week and it was about food. Not just a cooking show, but on how horrible our food is for us, especially the meat we eat. She recommended we watch the documentary "FOOD INC" which I did.

Boy, were my eyes opened. I'm just sick about it. Have any of you seen it? I will be thinking twice before eating beef or chicken again! I've always had an aversion to ground beef, but now I'm sure I'll never eat it. At the end of the documentary it talked about how we as consumers can effect a change in what our government and society thinks is acceptable food to be feeding us. It says by buying organic we can send the message that this is not acceptable. (You really should watch this show.)

So I'm taking the plunge. I've flirted a bit with organic products. The biggest challenge to our household is the cost. But a good point was made; "would you rather spend money on quality food now, or on doctors bills in the future, when the food you eat is making you sick?" So I'm headed to the store today, and I'm going to try my darndest not to let the $5/carton eggs scare me away. Wish me luck! Anyone have some healthy recipes your kids love?

I watched that Oprah show too. I haven't taken the time to see Food Inc. yet but I plan on watching it soon. I was so pumpe up to start buying Organic food and I agree. The cost is a bit alarming but it's a cost that I think is worth it. Good luck with your quest!

Hi Anisha,

I'm friends of Chase and Megan..

Cindy was telling me that you had watched this show and wrote about it! I'm glad you we impacted by the movie, and even more excited that you saw it on Oprah! I think that it is something that every american should watch.

Over the past year or so I have been making the transition to local and organic food. It has become quite the hobby of mine and something that has great rewards! I know at first it can seem like quite the effort(both time and money), but it can really have a positive impact on yourself. It really is a lot easier then people think. And most the time it takes only a bit more effort to obtain a FAR superior tasting and nutritious product!

You having a blog, so you are already half way to gaining the knowledge you need. A good portion of the stuff I have learned comes from other people on-line somewhere. I was going to post some links, but I'm not really sure what your interested in?

If you have any questions or need some direction let me know!!

PS Just saw that you asked for a recipe. Have you ever heard of Quinoa? Its kind of like a grain, but a lot healthier for you. It is really high in protein AND only takes 10 minutes to cook, minus soaking time. I made a chicken and mushroom soup with it that was really good! If you want a actually recipe let me know. Also, check out The Nourishing Gourmet. I have learned quite a bit on the healthy eating subject from this blog.

Thanks Kyle,

Thanks for the great information! I would love to hear where you find the best price on meat products, and anything else you want to clue me in onto. I have heard of quinoa, but didn't find it on my last grocery trip.
